“So I was talking to my teacher and she agreed you need to go on lots of dates.” There were so many things wrong with that sentence coming out of my almost thirteen year old’s mouth, I didn’t know where to start.  Being a little slow, I asked him to repeat himself.  “She said you definitely need to date more.  See, she agrees with me!  Go get married mom!” he explained as I sat there with my mouth hanging open.  Happy Valentine’s day to me.

I asked why he was talking about my dating life with his teacher, or anyone, for that matter?  He then told me the teacher was a friend of mine and she had asked if I was dating anyone, quite innocently.  My sweet pimp son jumped on that soapbox to launch into a discussion.   I ran into this teacher a few days later and we had quite a laugh about it as I apologized for his little rant on my behalf.  His birthday is right after Valentine’s Day, so maybe he has a little Cupid in him?

After recovering from that  gem of a dinner table discussion, he then mentioned that he was thinking of posting my picture on a dating site, like match or christian mingle.   I choked on my dinner, and once I could breathe again, gave him my toughest mom face and explained how that was both unnecessary and highly inappropriate on several fronts. I don’t think he quite understood my explanation of the difference between being alone vs. lonely and that it just has to be God’s timing in these things.  I am pretty sure all he heard was blah, blah, blah.

As we finished up dinner and I regained my composure, the news was highlighting a slightly crazed looking, local college professor shilling her new book, Get Married This Year.  My son pointed to the TV and said, “See,  even God is telling you to go get a date mom.”  That was quite a leap from the local news to an eleventh commandment!  He smiled, quite pleased with himself, and  I smiled that he equates a date with getting married.  Ah to be young and blissfully unaware!  When I  asked him why this was so important to him, he got a little thoughtful, “Well, I think you are awesome mom, and I know your husband would think so too.”  Best Valentine’s gift ever.
