I love Paula Deen.  She is like a saucy, southern fried Mrs. Clause dispensing kitchen advice with a twinkle in her eye and a fridge full of butter.  Her recipes look and sound so good, they make me want to lick my flat screen  grab my mixer and turn on the oven.  So I was sad, but not surprised,  to hear this week that Ms.Paula has been diagnosed with diabetes and she is going to have to make lots of changes to her cooking and lifestyle. Sigh.

While I am thankfully not in the same boat with diabetes, I am feeling a bit convicted that I need to change up my cooking/eating for myself and my boys.  I guess my mom thinks so too as she sent me a recipe link for ginger bran muffins.  Seriously.  Mmmmm, nothing says love like a big old bite of bran, mom!  I think I will start with a bit more moderation, like ridding the house of soda.

My friend Jaime is commiserating with me and Paula too, after her middle school daughter hugged her this week and stated that she was so glad her mom was “squishy”, not bony like some other moms.  Ouch.  Jaime quickly proclaimed that she will be wearing a leopard print bikini at the pool by this summer and her horrified middle schooler ended the conversation by backing out of the room, rolling her eyes.

Paula, we are on the wagon with you, girl.  No more sugar filled, fried anything, no more savory treats drenched in a glistening coat of sauce rich enough to stand a fork in, and no more chocolate treats (well, at least a lot less).  Time to buckle down and get healthy!  Ms. Deen, get well soon, and maybe you should consider changing your mantra from “mo’ butter, mo’ better” to “no butter, get better”.  But if you start making recipes like ginger bran muffins, I am so turning the channel…

I must say that Paula’s recipes were a little too buttery, crescent rolly, cream of everythingy for my tastes; and you can’t get more southern than me! That being said, my family is also “enjoying” yet another attempt at healthier cooking/eating. I made a pot of steel cut oatmeal last weekend. My hubs said he thought I was forcing him into a “cleanse”. Probably wayyyy TMI!
Wishing you and Ms Paula Dean a healthy New Year!

Thanks Deb! Wow, I thought if you lived south of the Mason Dixon line, your blood was technically 50% butter, LOL! LOVE the TMI-it makes me feel like part of your family :-)

Paula’s squash casserole with butter and mayo is the bomb. I’m not giving that up no matter what. Hope she finds a way to tweak those recipes and keep that twinkle in her eye. Get better, Paula!! And I’m with you, Heidi, if she pulls out bran I’m moving on. Great post.
